Easy Composting
Composting, often described as nature’s way of recycling, is the biological process of breaking up of organic waste such as food waste, manure, leaves, grass trimmings, paper, worms, and coffee grounds, etc., into an extremely useful humus-like substance by various micro-organisms including bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes in the presence of oxygen. Actinomycetes are similar to fungus in the way they grow and spread, but its distinguishing elements are that the types of materials they are efficient at decomposing. The active nature in this microscopic bacteria and the sheer number present (about 10 million per 1 gram of soil), make them highly effective at breaking down materials like tree bark, newspaper, and other hard organic material. Today, the use of composting to turn organic wastes into a valuable resource is expanding rapidly in many countries, as landfill space becomes scarce and expensive, and as people become more aware of the impact they have on the environment. A lot of people toy with the idea of composting but they lack knowledge about what is required and this makes them think that it will be difficult to start the process. This assumption just wastes their time and energy because the fact is composting is really easy to do. Inexpensive is not actually the word to describe the materials but free. The majority of the world’s population call these materials “wastes”, but every biodegradable material turns out to be highly useful once we start composting it. And you don't need a farm to start. You can start right in your own backyard. Composting bins come in a wide variety from expensive to cheap but we can still have it for free. How? We should learn about the words recycle, and improvise. Things like food scraps, dog poop, leaves, kitchen waste, and even urine are all good materials for composting. Once you know which materials you want to compost go to the Composting Techniques page and learn how to make your own composting pile - absolutely free of charge. If you have a pet, you surely dispose your pets’ waste. As a human, you eat daily, so you surely have food scraps to thrown in your trash every day. When fall comes in September every year, plenty of leaves are everywhere. Coffee grounds, vegetable trimmings, grass clippings, fruit peels, and meat scraps are present every week or every day. Even urine is a good source of nitrogen which is good for composting. We dispose these things frequent times daily and even if we do not make composts, the Earth receives it as part of nature’s cycle so you can decide whether you want to enjoy its benefits. Combining organic matter is composting in its purest state. Nutrients need to be balanced but the basic ingredients necessary to make composts are seen everywhere for free. In fact, throwing these things in our garbage is something that needs our attention. Nature will self-regenerate its power and produce compost in time, but our help is needed to live up to what nature naturally produces. Balancing ingredients is optional because no matter what we do, it would still decompose given enough time... even if we do not do anything at all. Easy Composting / Advantages Composting neutralizes pollution, produces healthier plants, and it saves us from the hassle of disposing materials that we do not want to use anymore. Among the basic things needed in composting, human effort ranks number one. Our desire, and time is what we find hard to give but composting is indeed really easy to do even for beginners. Just start now by combining all your wastes in an empty pile, place it on your backyard, and add some soil and fallen leaves.
