Facts on Global Warming
Facts on Global Warming
Benefits of Recycling.com is presenting this series of pages on global warming becaue we believe there is evidence to support it is real. Even so, we are open to be proven wrong, which is why there are pages on why it is not real. Fair is fair.
The truth is we just want people to be aware that human activities have the possibility of creating adverse effects in the US, Antarctica, Greenland, and throughout the world.
Global warming can also be detrimental to
wildlife such as polar bears, creatures like sea turtles, and sea life like coral reefs.
So is global warming a myth or are there facts to support it as a reality of our times? Is there really such a thing as the greenhouse effect? And if so, what is that?
Whether you believe global warming is real or not, we invite you to read what we have uncovered on the many pages of this site... and beyond. Remember, knowledge is power.
Facts on Global Warming / Rapid
and Unnatural
Generally, global
warming is not bad as the Earth has already warmed and cooled
several times over its estimated 4.5 billion years of existence.
However, global warming as we know it today is bad as it refers to the
rapid and unnatural increase of the planet's average surface air
temperature.
This increase is expected to cause dramatic changes in
climate which will surely affect all life on Earth.
Facts on Global Warming / It's
a Heat Wave
There can be no doubt that global warming is already
taking place. In fact, the ten warmest years of record occurred between
the years 1997-2008. Heat waves are also becoming more common and more
intense, causing more heat wave-related deaths.
The highest incidence
of heat wave-related deaths was recorded in 2003 when approximately
35,000 people died in Europe. Should world temperatures continue to
increase at the current rate, human populations to come will surely be
deprived of the hospitable climate we enjoy today.
Because
of the dramatic rate at which the globe is warming, the glaciers and
ice caps in Antarctica and around the world could melt. This
will cause some parts of the world to experience a rise in sea levels
while other parts will experience water shortages.
Sea levels have
already risen between five and nine inches within the past century and
it is still rising. Keep in mind that even just a 4-inch rise can flood
many different islands and coastal cities. At the current rate of
global warming, scientists believe that global sea levels can rise by
up to six feet.
Facts on Global Warming /
Nature's Fury
Although climate change is just starting, we already
experience a number of its negative effects. Within the past few years,
natural disasters such as hurricanes,
wildfires, and droughts have increased in frequency and intensity. In
2005, there were more severe hurricanes and storms than any other year.
Scientists believe that the increase was due to Atlantic temperatures
warming.
The change in climate has also caused crop failure
leading to famines and food shortages especially in the tropics. Even
deadly tropical diseases like dengue fever and malaria have spread to
more temperate countries because of climate change. Many species are
also becoming endangered due to changing ecosystems. Should we fail to
stop climate change, we will soon experience worse consequences.
Facts on Global Warming / Fuel
and Carbon Emissions
In recent years, more people have become aware of the
role of fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions in global warming.
In spite of that fact, fossil fuel use around the world is still
increasing each year. The number of utilized automobiles (one of the
largest contributors to carbon emissions) is also increasing at an
estimated sixteen million per year.
The climate seems to be changing at a rate faster than
the Earth has ever experienced but there's much we can do to curb
global warming. If we don't take action now, global warming could soon
become uncontrollable and the land you're standing on may be an ocean
or a desert within the next 25 to 100 years.
