The truth is we just want people to be aware that human activities (as well as natural causes) have the possibility of creating adverse effects in the US, Antarctica, Greenland, and throughout the world.

Global warming can also be detrimental to wildlife such as polar bears, creatures like sea turtles, and sea life like coral reefs,not to mention human health, due to the spread of disease.

So is global warming a myth or are there facts to support it as a reality of our times? Is there really such a thing as the greenhouse effect? And if so, what is that?

Global Warming Scientists

Global warming
as any other natural phenomenon has a substantial scientific background with many supporters of the concept as well as with few opponents.

Before getting acquaintanced with some modern scientists, working on the problem of global warming of how to stop global warming, we should obviously get back to the 19th century – the time when the greenhouse effect was first discovered.

Global Warming Scientists / Joseph Fourier (1768-1830)

Joseph Fourier was the French mathematician and physicist, who first discovered the greenhouse effect, which is now referred to as the key component of global warming phenomenon. In 1824 the scientists described the theory that gases in the atmosphere of the Earth may increase its surface temperature.

Fourier explained that there is a certain balance between the amount of energy (heat) the planet obtains from number of sources (e.g. Sun), and the energy, which the Earth releases as the infrared radiation (Fourier called it “dark heat”).

The scientist suggested that there are specific gases in the atmosphere (now they are known as greenhouse gases), which can influence the balance between obtained and emitted energy by absorbing some of the heat, going from Earth’s surface upward and then releasing it back downward, thus heating lower layers of the atmosphere and the Earth’s surface itself.

Global Warming Scientists / John Tyndall (1820-1893)

The theory of greenhouse effect was further developed in the works and experiments of John Tyndall, a prominent English physicist.

The scientists showed experimentally that various gases in the atmosphere (water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone and others) can absorb the heat, radiated by the Earth’s surface.

In fact, Tyndall was the first to prove the greenhouse effect of the atmosphere, which was suggested earlier. It is interesting to note, that John Tyndall also showed that water vapor is the strongest greenhouse gas.

Global Warming Scientists / Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927)

This Swedish scientist was the first to evaluate the greenhouse effect quantitatively. Svante Arrhenius suggested that the growing amount of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels burning may alter significantly the greenhouse effect.

He predicted the global warming with the only mistake: he thought it would take about 3000 years for the carbon dioxide to double in the atmosphere, while modern calculations say this process will take only about a century.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes (IPCC)

Tough IPCC is the scientific body rather than a separate scientist, but it is important to mention it in this article since the modern understanding of global warming is mainly based on the reports of this organization. In year 2001, the Third Assessment Report by IPCC appeared.

The document states that the average surface temperature has risen in the 19th century. It also claims that the human activity and mainly fossil fuels use caused an acceleration of global warming rates.

Finally, the report predicts that if the emissions of carbon dioxide and methane will continue, the global warming will also progress, causing some particular types of extreme weather conditions (hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, etc.) and see level rise.

Global Warming Scientists / Opponents of Global Warming Mainstream

Speaking about global warming scientists, it is impossible to skip those scientists that do not agree with the mainstream evaluation of the global warming phenomenon – they simply claim it is not a real problem produced at the hand of man. Actually, it is not the existence of the global warming or its progression that cause disputes among the scientists.

The major discord refers to the role of human activity in the development of global warming. While official scientific opinion says that it is because of extensive use of fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions that the global warming began to accelerate since the 19th century, there are still many scientists, who do not agree with such statement.

Timothy F. Ball, Robert M. Carter and Vincent R.Gray are among those, who doubt several aspects of the modern understanding of global warming. Timothy F. Ball says there was a global temperature decrease between 1940 and 1980, which than was followed by the increase in average temperature.

Scientist believes that shortly we will face another short-termed episode of lowering global temperature. Other scientists doubt the correctness of statistic data and suggest that global warming can even simply not happen these days.

A great amount of scientists, such as Sallie Baliunas (astronomer), Ian Clark (hydrogeologist), David Douglass (physicist), George Kukla (climatologist), Tad Murty (oceanographer) and others dispute the role of human activity in the global warming.

They say global warming phenomenon is much more likely to occur in the result of natural processes, than because of human activity. These group of scientists support the idea that the global warming, we are faced with today, is caused by such factors as increased solar radiation, outgassing in the World Ocean and, perhaps, microbial activities.

Finally, there are also scientists, who say that global warming is not absolutely that bad for humans. For example, Sherwood Idso says that people may even benefit from global warming, since warming has actually a positive effect on human health.

Besides, the scientist say that the growing amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will improve the health-promoting properties of the foods, we eat.

So, as one can see there is no consensus in the global warming issues understanding and evaluation among the scientists.

While the mainstream alarms because of potential devastating effect of global warming and calls for urgent steps to prevent further use of fossil fuels, there are also many scientists, who says that everything goes naturally and humans overestimate greatly their role in such global and long-lasting processes as global warming.
