Sustainability is the ability to maintain a certain status or process in existing systems. The most frequent use of the term “sustainability” is connected to biological or human systems in the context of ecology. The ability of an ecosystem to function and maintain productivity for a prolonged period is also sustainability.
Living a sustainable lifestyle is one way to help. In this series pages we will go into what sustainability has to with ecology, recycling, water, and more. Water Movement Sustainability / Our Most Precious Resource
Water is nature’s most precious resource. In other words, Water permeates life on Earth. Increasing industrialization and agricultural usage has taken a great toll upon reservoir of fresh water. Since 1950s, every decade has witnessed more water withdrawals by humans.
Sustainable development of water resources refers to a holistic approach to development, conservation, and management of water resources, an approach that considers all components of the hydrologic system.
Sustainability is of paramount importance for the survival of living beings. The role of water in sustainability can be compared to role of the heart in human body.
Water is used commercially, domestically, industrially and for irrigation purposes also. Hence, it plays a central role in the life support system. Shortage of water means complete stagnation of the above-mentioned activities.
Water Movement Sustainability / Restoring Balance
Current patterns of water use involve excessive waste. The rising water pollution is causing immense harm to aquatic ecosystems leading to environmental imbalance.
Demand for fresh water is increasing with every passing day and the water levels across the globe are coming down and there are signs of stress on all water resources. More than two billion people are facing a scarcity of water and in the next 50 years, the amount of water needed will be double.
Thus, water has a strategic role both for present and future generations and should be managed using a systemic approach. Combined savings in agriculture, industry and domestic water supplies could significantly defer investment in costly new water-resource development and have enormous impact on the sustainability of future supplies.
Companies and government bodies must to come up with effective new strategies for water sustainability so they won’t have to buy water in future years.
Moreover, Looming water crisis has more damaging consequences than climate change problem. Water has played a role not only in the history of countries, but in religion, mythology, and art.
Dehydration (lack of water) will kill us faster than starvation (lack of food). Since, the plants and animals we eat also depend on water; lack of it could cause both dehydration and starvation.
Conserving water requires efforts from every human being on this planet. If we do not realize our responsibilities towards environment now, we are surely heading towards extinction.
